If you looked in my wallet right now, you’d think I worked for Visa and MasterCard, because of all the plastic I have. I have at least seven different cards that I use regularly, even I admit is a lot. But despite what it might look like, I do not disperse in any way. The only reason I have so many cards that I earn rewards on all different types, fees paid magnificently every time. I’m always more credit good shots, too, so the amount of plastic in my possession is expected to grow rapidly.

Credit card offers aren’t exactly a rare occurence. In fact, many people are bombarded by multiple credit card offers each and every day. The question is, how do you know which credit card offers are the good ones and which ones should be thrown in the trash (after being shredded of course)? Follow these seven bits of advice.

1. What Does “Pre-Qualified” Really Mean?

First things first — when you get those credit card offers in the mail that say you’re “pre-qualified,” it does not mean that you’ve been approved for the credit card that is being offered. You still have to apply for the card (and have your credit history run) before you’ll actually be approved.

Many people have gotten frustrated because they respond to a “pre-qualified” offer only to find out they’re not really approved.

Credit card offers list the terms and conditions of various cards. When you compare credit cards, look at the interest rate, also known as the APR. It might be listed as 0%. If so, you can bet that it will be much higher in six months to a year. 0% interest cards have introductory phases. After that phase has ended, they are subject to regular interest rates. Most cards offer 12-24% interest rates. The lower the rate, the faster you’ll be able to pay off your debt.

Also make note of the type of interest rates on your credit card offers. Some rates might be “fixed”, and some might be “variable”. Choose fixed-rate interest whenever possible. Variable interest rates can change with little warning from the card issuer. If you do choose a credit card with a variable interest rate, make sure you know when and how much that rate can change.
