Credit Card Debt – A Costly Lesson

Sharon Luke (not the real name), a working woman, is extremely stressful when she received her thick credit card statements an hour ago. The banks have been calling her to remind her to pay her minimum monthly payments since 3 months ago. She is deeply depressed with her current financial situation.

Sharon’s parents have been advising her to stop using her cards many times but she refused to listen because she thought that she would not face any problem paying off her outstanding balances with her monthly income. A year ago, she was promoted to managerial level and she had great satisfaction with her achievement. She loved clubbing and shopping almost every weekend. Her wardrobe was always full with luxurious and branded items.

Unfortunately, few months ago, she got the bad news. Her company decided not to retrench any staff but all the managers had a big cut on their salaries. With the current salary, Sharon has lost the ability to pay the minimum amount stated on her card statements. With no saving in her account, she is now struggling hard with her debts. She doesn’t have any idea where to obtain extra cash to pay off her debt.

There are 3 things she should do now to overcome her problem:

1) Look for a part time job during weekends to gain more income

2) Sell off all the luxurious items to obtain cash

3) Borrow money from family members or friends to pay off the debts first so that she can avoid herself from irritating calls from creditors

If you were Sharon, what would you do? Struggling with debts is indeed the most painful lesson for her.
